Metal stairs and skull sculpture.

National Ornamental Metal Museum

Field review by the editors.

Memphis, Tennessee

Open on the grounds of an old U.S. Marine hospital since 1979. The active Smithy on site has produced everything from a nuclear sub's sterling silver coffee and tea service to the trophies for annual Memphis International Barbecue Cook-Off. The museum itself displays mostly fine art (although there is a large dragon sculpture attached to the ceiling), while the outdoor garden displays big metal sculptures. Exhibit rotate, and some are just on loan, so you never know what you'll see when you get here. Odds are at least some of it will be fun.
