Rusty Animal Jungle
St. Louis, Missouri
Standing at the southeast corner of the Saint Louis Zoo, this jungle of rusty steel -- officially titled "Animals Always" -- is 36 feet high, 130 feet long, and contains 60 animals of various exotic species.
Created by artist Albert Paley, the sculpture's 100 tons of rusty steel had to all be smoothed and burnished so that it wouldn't give lockjaw to anyone who touched it. This helped boost Animals Always' final cost to $1 million.
The artwork was promoted at its 2006 unveiling as "the largest sculpture of any public zoo in the nation."
