Berlin Wall Slabs
Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri
These three Wall slabs, peace dividends of the Cold War, appear suspiciously thin and short compared to others we've seen; any motivated East Berliner could've punched through or climbed over them. It's next to the Army Engineers Museum, which may have a wall-shaving machine as part of its collection, so make sure to ask a uniformed docent inside.
The graffiti on the three slabs seems contrived, and was possibly added later: "PEACE," "DEMO-CRACY," and a "TEAR DOWN THE WALL" with a Smiley Face (probably more inspired by Pink Floyd than Ronald Reagan).
An accompanying historical marker explains at length the real Berlin Wall, but never mentions that the slabs here were a actually part of it, fueling our caution. Still, they make a Cold War history-adjacent photo-op, which is probably the point of having them here.
