Grave of Scopes: Monkey Man

Field review by the editors.

Paducah, Kentucky

John T. Scopes was a Tennessee schoolteacher. In 1925 he defied state law and taught his students about about evolution. His trial made national news, and the strain of it killed the prosecuting attorney, former presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan. Scopes lost, paid a $100 fine, and eventually outlived the anti-evolution law. When he died in 1970, he was buried here.
