Grave of the Boy Martyr of the Confederacy
Little Rock, Arkansas
David O. Dodd was only 17 when he was hanged by the Yankees on January 8, 1864, for being a Confederate spy. He was buried only a couple of blocks away, in a cemetery grave donated by a sympathizer. He lay there in obscurity for almost 50 years. Then, in 1913, the United Daughters of the Confederacy paid to have a modest obelisk erected over his grave, which was outlined with paving stones. The stone at the very end is engraved, "Boy Martyr of the Confederacy," an apparent effort by the UDC to distinguish Dodd from Sam Davis, the "Boy Hero of the Confederacy," who was also young, uncooperative, and hanged as a spy in neighboring Tennessee.
