Maid of the Mist
Niagara Falls, New York
Since 1895, tourists have donned rain slickers, climbed into little boats named "Maid of the Mist," and been taken into the drenching spray at the foot of Niagara Falls. The boats are a tribute-of-sorts to a suicidal Indian girl who paddled her canoe over the Falls so that she could join her dead boyfriend (Postcards of the Maid in her canoe are sold in Niagara Falls gift shops). The attraction is loud, wet, and potentially debilitating to modern hand-held electronic devices.
Round trip is only 20 minutes, but it seems much longer.
