Moon Walk Monument

Field review by the editors.

Edmonds, Washington

Lunar arrowhead? Space spatula? Moon shoehorn? The official title of this upright, gray cement thing is "Space Capsule," and it was unveiled July 4, 1976. Made of reinforced concrete, the monument stands 11 feet tall (not counting its pedestal) and weighs nearly two tons.

Space Capsule was the vision of Dennis Clark, a 19-year-old Edmonds High School graduate, who enlisted Howard Duell, an Edmonds Community College art instructor, to build it. Both sides of the concrete slab have faint bronze inlays: one depicts a Saturn V rocket with the moon behind it, the other has a space-suited moon man and an American flag. It's an odd mix of media that is becoming progressively less visible with time.

According to an accompanying plaque, the small patch of grass on which the monument stands is "Neil Armstrong Plaza," and inside Space Capsule is a time capsule with the names of everyone who contributed to the project.
