Many tourists don't realize that you can walk across the Brooklyn Bridge -- on the same wooden elevated walkway that's been there since 1883. It's free, the views are impressive (if you don't mind heights and the sound of roaring traffic), and there are historical plaques and markers around the stone towers at either end.

Directions:: From Manhattan, the fenced-in promenade begins behind City Hall, just outside the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall subway station. From Brooklyn, the entrance is at the intersection of Tillary and Adams Sts. There's also a pedestrian staircase on Prospect St. at Cadman Plaza.
