Saucer-Shaped Theater of Gold
Racine, Wisconsin
A big gold flying saucer spans a plaza, elevated on brick wall struts. The Golden Rondelle was built specifically for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair by Johnson Wax to show the film, "To Be Alive!" According to the company's history, Herbert Fisk Johnson Jr. told his underlings to build the theater and make the 18-minute film even though they thought it was a risky idea. Johnson said, "Gentlemen, some decisions are only for the brave" (It's easier to be brave when you're the CEO). After the Fair ended, Johnson had the theater dismantled and reassembled as his company's headquarters, where it still shows "To Be Alive!" today -- a unique opportunity to experience what it was like to be at a Fair exhibit in 1964.
