Big Red Rocker
Maggie Valley, North Carolina
The Big Red Rocker was built by store owner Chuck Cummings in the early 1990s. He added steps when he grew tired of hauling a ladder out every time someone wanted to sit in the chair.
People send him photos of themselves in the chair -- from a 91-year-old woman to a reunion of Playboy Bunnies -- which he displays inside his shop. He also displays a photo of George W. Bush in a normal-size version of the chair.
Although it's a rocking chair, the Big Red Rocker does not rock for safety reasons. One day a pack of bikers stopped by and tried to rock the rocker off its foundation. "It's a rocker!" they explained to Chuck, who had to shoo them off the property.
We asked Chuck if he had any tips for people who might want to build their own giant chair. "Make sure you have a forklift," he said.
