Loved to Death Taxidermy
San Francisco, California
In 2012, the Science Channel reality TV show Oddities (set in a bizarre New York antique/collectibles shop) expanded its franchise by adding a west coast variant: "Oddities San Francisco." The weekly half hour program took place in the Loved to Death store, where knowledgeable employees helped out and haggled with customers over bone art, stuffed dead creatures, vintage automatons, and Victorian gimcracks.
While the SF series ended in 2013 after two seasons, the physical store seems to thrive on a combination of collectors, decorators, and Haight-Ashbury tourists. The public section is a single storefront room where walls are packed with old dolls, strange jewelry, animal skeletons, taxidermy, and recent books on anatomy, absinthe, the Mutter Museum. If you're in dire need of an articulated snake in a block of lucite, a replica Elephant Man skull, or a Victorian Mourning Hair Pendant, this might be a good place to look.
