In a city of sinners, Joan of Arc is a certified saint.
Golden Joan of Arc
New Orleans, Louisiana
You'd think that a city as French as New Orleans would have always had a statue of Joan of Arc, the "Maid of Orleans." But this statue wasn't unveiled until 1972, after spending years in storage (The city said it couldn't afford the $35,000 needed to erect it). Portland, Oregon, has a nearly identical Joan; both are copies of an 1899 statue in Paris by Emmanuel Fremiet.
Joan stood outside the International Trade Mart until 1999. Then a casino bought the property and kicked saintly Joan out. It could have ended badly for the Maid, but she instead found a new home in the popular, crowded, and entirely appropriate French Market. She was also given a fresh coat of gold, and a new gilded pennant to replace one that somehow was lost in her various travels.
