Glooscap: 40-Foot-Tall Indian
Millbrook, Nova Scotia
A pre-Bunyan Bunyan, Glooscap is the hero of Mi'kmaq creation stories, giving his people the canoe and fire -- hence the torch held by the statue -- and creating Five Islands in the Bay of Fundy by turning himself into a giant beaver and slapping the ocean with his tail.
Glooscap was said to be so huge that he used Prince Edward Island as a pillow.
After the 40-foot-tall fiberglass Glooscap statue was unveiled in 2005, visitors quickly noted that viewing him from the side turned his half-raised non-torch arm into something that resembled a Bunyan-size willy. The designers, AtlantexCreativeWorks, had to amputate the arm at the elbow, then reattach it in a different position.
