Hand-Carved Bigfoot Family
Pounding Mill, Virginia
Jack Howery was at the Tazewell County Fair in 2014 when someone suggested that he carve a Bigfoot. He acquired an eight-foot-long, 800 pound cherry log, then went to the local library to look up Bigfoot photos. The completed sculpture not only has big feet but also very large hands, which Jack felt was appropriate for a Bigfoot. Painted blood spatters show where Bigfoot was nicked by a bullet and had a toe caught in an animal trap, but Jack kept the wounds small to show that neither did much damage.
Jack placed the Bigfoot at the east end of his tomato patch, and it was so successful at scaring away crows that Jack later carved a mama and baby Bigfoot.
Papa Bigfoot originally featured eyes that glowed at night, but they proved too alarming for passing motorists and have been removed.
