Korean War Foxhole.

Korean War Foxhole

Field review by the editors.

San Antonio, Texas

A unique monument to Korean War Veterans hunkers down in a small public park across from San Antonio's performing arts center. Entitled "Night Watch," the sculpture depicts beleaguered soldiers visible from chest up on a large rock cairn. They're in a ant hill-like fox hole. The crumbly white concrete between the rocks resembles snow, the two bronze infantrymen are bundled up for winter action. Around them are handy canteens, an ammo belt, and pineapple style grenades, in expectation of a late night enemy charge.

Night Watch.

The veterans memorial, dedicated on December 11, 1994, was designed by Emilio Aguirre and sculpted by Jonas Perkins. A plaque lists the number of casualties during the war from 1950-1953, along with "C" Company 20th Infantry members killed in action.

The veterans plaza also features a large and dramatic Vietnam War sculpture and memorial.
