Forbidden McCoy Cemetery

Field review by the editors.

Hardy, Kentucky

Oddly, the McCoy family cemetery is currently owned by a member of the Hatfield clan, who refuses to open it to the public. A big sign at the entrance road, with multiple exclamation marks, warns that only those who can prove a blood relation to those buried in the cemetery are allowed to enter, and even those people are only allowed five days a year. A big monument to the feud was erected in the cemetery in 1975, but few people have seen it.

Across the highway, at the McCoy Homeplace, we were told that the cemetery's owner even refused to allow the state of Kentucky to erect a historical marker out by the road -- so the marker had to be moved several miles south, where it stands next to the Feudin' Pig and Stabbing Cabin.
