Houdini in a Straitjacket

Field review by the editors.

Appleton, Wisconsin

A bronze bust of the famous magician Harry Houdini, tied in a straitjacket, was unveiled in his hometown on August 27, 2015. It had been originally sculpted by Craig Campbell for a reality TV series.

According to the statue's Appleton sponsors, the tied-up depiction of Houdini was symbolic as well as historical. Houdini's rags-to-riches success story showed everyone that, in America, no restraints were inescapable.
