The Big Foot
Vining, Minnesota
Ken Nyberg's sculpture of a giant human foot was the first of many bizarre outdoor artworks that now fill his tiny hometown of Vining, all created by Ken. Eleven feet tall, weighing 1,200 pounds, "The Big Foot" is made from odd-shaped scraps of iron and steel, like all of Ken's sculptures. Ken welds the pieces together, forming visible "scars" that may remind you of Frankenstein's monster. He told us that he learned this technique from his grandmother, who would stitch together "crazy quilts" from castoff scraps of cloth.
Ken completed The Big Foot in 1991, and he deliberately flattened its upturned Big Toenail to create a seat for human-size visitors.
