Peanut monument in 1991.
World's Largest Peanut
Pearsall, Texas
Somehow, we managed to forget about this little roadside peanut monument. We'd photographed it in 1991 and featured it prominently in stories about competing town claims to fame. But other than this neglected statue, with its 5 or 6 ft. long peanut, Pearsall was mum about its agricultural prowess.
Our notes from an August stop mention: "No postcards in town...The 50 mile drive between W.L. Strawberry and W.L. Peanut is deserted and scary." As civic goobers in other states sang louder praises to themselves, Pearsall fell off of our map....
25 years later, behold! A tip shows that Pearsall's peanut survives, with newer lettering stating its unchanging claim of "55,000,000 Lbs. Marketed Annually."
