Drumheller Hoodoos
Drumheller, Alberta
It takes millions of years of erosion to form a hoodoo, but only one good rainstorm to crumple it into a pile of rubble. Fortunately, rainstorms are infrequent in this part of Alberta, and each of the hoodoos -- 20-foot-tall pillars of sandstone -- is capped with a pancake-like hat of shale that gives them a distinctive shape and serves as a hoodoo umbrella.
Paths and overlooks keep visitors at a safe distance from the fragile hoodoos (and out of the dirt), and an adjacent parking area is a rendezvous spot for food trucks during the peak summer months.
