Friend to Friend Monument
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
A bronze sculpture tops a stone base that resembles an above-ground tomb. Created by Ron Tunison, dedicated August 21, 1993, the statues depict Confederate Gen. Lewis Armistead, wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, placing his pocket watch in the hand of a Union Captain, asking him to deliver it to his friend, Union Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock.
Both generals and the captain were freemasons. "Their unique bonds of friendship," reads an inscription on the statue base, "enabled them to remain a brotherhood undivided, even as they fought in a divided nation."
It makes you wonder why freemasons didn't just wear special hats during the Civil War so that other freemasons would know not to shoot them.
Despite the this-is-my-dying-wish imagery, Gen. Armistead's wounds were not considered life-threatening at the time -- but he nevertheless died two days later from infection. He is not buried here.
