Smallest City Hall in the U.S.
Maskell, Nebraska
Calling Maskell a "city" is a stretch -- it has less than 400 people -- but there's no denying that the seat of its government is small, even for a small town. Maskell City Hall is only 10 x 12 feet, and resembles a large shed.
When Maskell holds its Village Board meetings on the second Monday of every month, City Hall can accommodate Maskell's seven town officials and two concerned citizens. If there are more than two, they have to stand in the doorway.
But it's a real city hall, and an official attraction, promoted by the town, with a Smallest City Hall sign out in front for photo-ops.
Some Mondays, when the weather is cold, it can be difficult to sit through a meeting in Maskell City Hall, which has no heat. But its cozy confines at least ensure some measure of animal warmth -- as long as there are only two concerned citizens and the door is closed.
