Sliding Jail
Jerome, Arizona
In the 1930s, dynamite explosions from copper miners caused Jerome's small jail to slide off its foundation 225 feet into the middle of one of the town's main streets. "The road was altered to go around it," notes the Jail's bronze historical plaque. The Jail is now downhill even further from its original spot, not because of more blasting, but because the Arizona Department of Transportation pushed it there. An unstable hillside means it could slide again.
