Mambo Breaching Whales
Pacific Grove, California
In 2016, after a pair of large cypress trees in an oceanside park were savaged by a winter windstorm, the city of Pacific Grove trimmed what remained for safety reasons, leaving two relatively unattractive trunks. By August, three local artists were working on site in Berwick Park, transforming the stumps into two happy-go-lucky breaching whales, with the base carved to resemble splashing ocean waves.
The touristy design was not embraced by all, and was debated among townspeople and officials. Some still don't like it -- but it has become a popular photo op landmark.
