Here Stood the Hangman's Tree
Jackson, California
Stand on the spot where at least ten men were hanged during California's Wild West heyday. The oak tree, conveniently located next to a town saloon, burned down in 1862, but it wasn't forgotten; in fact, a likeness of the Hangman's Tree was incorporated into the county's first official seal. 75 years later the Native Daughters of the Golden West placed a plaque in the sidewalk to mark the spot where the tree once stood.
