Sit-on-Me Chuckwalla
Kingman, Arizona
The chuckwalla is native to the Kingman region of Arizona. It's the largest lizard in the U.S., but not nearly as large as the mosaic-glass-and-concrete version that Kingman unveiled next to Route 66 on February 9, 2018. Sculpted by Solomon Bassoff, the lifelike reptile artwork is seven feet long and weighs nearly a ton. Its eyes are glass, its claws are solid bronze, and its back -- which is built for sit-down photos -- is inset with the same kind of little multicolor tiles that were popular on American bathroom floors when Route 66 was in its heyday.
