Flatwoods Monster Sign
Flatwoods, West Virginia
According to Andrew Smith at the Flatwoods Monster Museum, the "Home of the Green Monster" sign, routed out of wood, was probably made in the 1990s. "No one really knows, because no one who was involved with it is in the town government any more," he told us. "The Green Monster" is one of several names given to a terrifying creature that briefly stalked Flatwoods in 1952, because either its skin or outfit -- accounts vary -- was a glowing green.
Originally there were two Green Monster signs, one each at the north and south ends of town. For some reason the north sign was removed, and was later found by Andrew, leaning against an outside wall of a Flatwoods municipal building, while he was painting the town's Monster Chair nearby. He asked town officials if he could have it for the Museum, and they agreed as a fair exchange for the Chair.
The other sign remains standing at the south end of town.
