Eye of Sauron
Ossining, New York
It's 42 feet high, weighs 80 tons, and resembles a lumpy concrete wishbone or, as some locals have called it, an arch from the Bedrock City McDonald's. The concrete was poured on-site into an arch-shaped trench by artist Peter Lundberg, then hoisted into place in June 2015. Lundberg has said that he generally likes the piece, an opinion not shared by his Ossining critics. The part that Lundberg doesn't like is the "eye" at the apex of the arch, fitted with blue-green glass so that it glows when the sun shines through. It was put there at the request of the property developer who paid for the arch. Lundberg complained that it made his artwork look like "a lighthouse," apparently unaware of its much closer resemblance to the evil, all-seeing eye from the Lord of the Rings films.
