Big Red: Hammer Head
Malibu, California
Big Red, a red claw hammer standing upright with cartoony arms and legs, was sculpted out of steel by artist Ed Benavente in 1996. Big Red stands protectively overlooking (if it had eyes) a playground and was dedicated to the children of Malibu (according to its plaque) on October 19, 1997. For something so big, with a height variously given at 14 or 20 feet, the hammer is more goofy than ominous. Benavente said that he sculpted it with "no identity," which sounds like artist-speak for nonthreatening, applied to a giant anthropomorphic hammer.
