Jack the Loyal Dog
Louisville, Kentucky
James David Bohanon was known around Louisville as a thoroughbred horse breeder (He was on the board of directors of the Kentucky Derby Museum). When he died, his grave was personalized -- not with a bronze horse, but with a dog, modeled after one owned by James. The name "Jack" is engraved on his collar, and he stares mournfully at James' simple tombstone.
Cemetery lore has a kennel full of tales of loyal dogs who refused to leave their owners' graves. There's no confirmation that Jack actually did this, but it's nice to imagine that he did (Visitors often leave toys for the dog as grave offerings). And according to Michael Higgs of the Cave Hill Heritage Foundation, Jack did die shortly after James. But not at the gravesite. And Jack's not buried here. Just James.
