Red, White, and Blue Yeager Rocket
St. Albans, West Virginia
The rocket was erected on July 4, 1970, by the Boy Scouts to honor test pilot Chuck Yeager, who in 1947 became the first human to fly faster than sound. Chuck was from another West Virginia town, but that didn't discourage the Scouts, who somehow got their hands on a fairly impressive rocket that they painted red, white, and blue, and stood upright as if ready for launch. The rocket's patriotic paint job has been repeatedly refreshed over the years, keeping the monument looking nice, and no one seems to care that Yeager never became an astronaut and thus never flew into space on a rocket.
The rocket-monument has a time capsule inside, but no one can remember what's in it or when it should be opened.
