Grave of Tammy Faye Bakker

Field review by the editors.

Waldron, Kansas

Tammy Faye was one of the most famous celebrities of the late 1980s: married to televangelist Jim Bakker; co-host of PTL, the glitziest Christian show on TV; and de facto queen of Heritage USA, the Bakkers' Disneyland-inspired Born-Again theme park.

Tammy divorced Jim in 1992 when he was in prison for fraud -- then married Roe Messner, the chief builder of Heritage USA, who had just divorced his wife (and who was also later imprisoned for fraud). When Tammy died in 2007 her husband buried her next to his mother outside of Waldron, Kansas, in a small, unmarked, windswept prairie cemetery accessible only by miles of dirt road. Waldron currently has a population of 10.

It's about as far from the Hollywood tinsel of PTL as possible for Tammy Faye. In her heyday she was known for her giant hair and copious makeup, crying on camera during the Bakkers' frequent pleas for money, mascara running down her face. Today, fans leave offerings of lipstick, gloss, and mascara on her tombstone.
