Martian Brick Head
Columbia, South Carolina
In a place of honor outside the county administration complex, a flattened head with cartoony antennae, made of bricks, grins puckishly from a low brick wall. It is utterly out-of-place, and that's the point.
The head was built in 2000 as part of a joint project between Texas sculptor Donna L. Dobberfuhl and students from local schools. The students designed brick panels representing various topics for the new plaza in front of the administration complex; Corey Gochenour was assigned "the arts." He crafted a panel featuring reels of movie film, a jointed human figurine sometimes used by sculptors -- and a My Favorite Martian-style head. He was inspired to include the head, he said, because as an artsy person in his high school he felt like an alien.
