Smoke-Breathing Dragon

Field review by the editors.

Cortland, New York

Financed and built by SUNY Cortland alumni, a 26-foot-long dragon was unveiled outside the university's football/soccer stadium in September 2017 -- mascot of the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon sports teams. Designed by art department lecturer Scott Oldfield, the dragon belches smoke whenever the home team scores. A camera trained on the dragon broadcasts the belch to cheering fans inside the stadium.

Mike Vela, who put up most of the money for the dragon, originally wanted it to breath fire, but that proved impractical.
