Big Blue Mecha-Crab

Field review by the editors.

Dover, New Hampshire

Local artist Nate Walker built the big blue crustacean in 2009 -- then realized he didn't have a place to put it. He wanted to give it to the Dover children's museum, and three years later the city council and art commission gave the museum permission to place it permanently out front, in the city park.

Maybe ten feet tall, the crab is made of bolted-together steel with mechanical legs and large industrial claws. Nate had previously made a big ant, several jellyfish, and a spider playing a ukulele, but nothing as big as the crab. The curved top of its carapace is fashioned from the hood of a VW Beetle.
