16-Foot-Tall Mermaid and Oil Rig

Field review by the editors.

Port Fourchon, Louisiana

Officially titled Lady of the Gulf, it's a big, blue sculpture of a mermaid ascending from the water, with a cloak that includes diving fins and an oil rig. Designed by Robert Epstein, it's a memorial to those who die in the Gulf of Mexico, and was inspired by the 11 men who perished on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded on April 20, 2010. The survivors were taken to the Emergency Command Center that stands behind the statue, which was unveiled on October 21, 2017. "If wrapped in your cloak is all that is left should I not be found, Give solace to my loved ones, O' Lady of the Gulf, I have gone home where greater seas abound."
