Cole Land Transportation Museum
Bangor, Maine
Galen Cole was a businessman and town character in Bangor. He ran a trucking business and became fascinated with the idea that things that moved on the ground in Maine had to be special. So he started a Maine-centered vehicle collection, and in 1990 opened his Land Transportation Museum with his wife, Sue.
The museum is non-discriminatory; as long as something moved on land in Maine, it's worthy of inclusion. On display are full-size trains, trucks, motorcycles, sleighs, tractors, carriages, bicycles, cars, fire engines, wagons, and even tanks. Perhaps the most Maine-like of all is the museum's collection of snow removal equipment in its unique "Snowplow Alley." And because this is Maine, where weather can be a hassle, everything is displayed indoors.
