Edge: Highest Outdoor Sky Deck in the Western Hemisphere
New York, New York
The Edge viewing deck is 1,131 feet above the New York City asphalt -- and hangs 80 feet off the side of a skyscraper. The elevator ride, despite being high-speed, takes a full minute to get there, and entertains you with a multimedia show to take your mind off of where you are and where you're going.
Up on the viewing deck itself are floor-to-ceiling windows in all directions -- downtown, midtown, uptown, New Jersey -- that are all angled outward, so that you see down as well as out. These views can be unsettling enough, but the worst (or best) is a section of triangular glass floor that lets you look straight down; directly below your feet are the tiny taxis and ant-like pedestrians on 10th Ave.
