Bird On A Bicycle

Miami, Florida

The bicycle-riding cockatoo at Jungle Island is an Old Florida tourist icon, a veteran from the days when the attraction was in a lower-rent part of Miami and was known as Parrot Jungle Gardens. Pinky, the attraction's original bike bird, even met Winston Churchill, and energetically pedaled his bicycle across the Parrot Jungle high wire from the early 1960s until well into the 1990s (Cockatoos can live over 70 years).

In the early 2000s we caught a performance with Pinky's successor, Nikki, at the attraction's Winged Wonders show, which can accommodate 1,200 fans in its "Parrot Bowl" outdoor amphitheater. Although cockatoos are not pedal-pushers in the wild, we were told that bike riding at the Parrot Bowl helps keep the birds in good shape.
