Cabin Found In House That Burned Down
Snowflake, Arizona
In 1878, settler Andrew Locy Rogers built a log cabin in what would later be the town of Snowflake. As his family grew, the log walls, floor, and ceiling were covered over with drywall and the cabin was eventually swallowed by a two-story house built around it. By the time Rogers' great-grandkids lived there, the existence of the cabin had been forgotten.
In 1989 the house burned down. When a crew arrived to bulldoze the ruins they saw some logs, peeled back the drywall, and found to everyone's surprise the undamaged cabin.
Still on its original spot, now surrounded by a city park, the cabin has been outfitted with period furnishings. Visitors can peer through the windows; inside tours are given by appointment.
