Future Birthplace of Captain Janeway

Bloomington, Indiana

Unveiled in October 2020, a bronze bust of the Star Trek character Kathryn Janeway marks the spot where the starship commander will be born on May 20, 2336. Sculpted by Aaron Eby, the upper half of Janeway folds her arms atop a futuristic pedestal shaped like a Starfleet insignia. The concrete slab on which it stands is marked with a Vulcan handprint.

Kathryn Janeway captained Star Trek: Voyager through its seven seasons from 1995 to 2001. An accompanying plaque features a map of the 70,000-light-year odyssey of the Starship, from its opening accidental belch into the Delta Quadrant back to Earth. It notes that Janeway, "is of Starfleet's highest caliber... a symbol of possibility for women across the planet...."

The actress who played Janeway, Kate Mulgrew, had previously starred in TV series such as Ryan's Hope and Mrs. Columbo. She was not born in Bloomington, Indiana, but instead was born in Iowa, just like another future Star Trek captain.
