Statue #22, 24: Grover Cleveland
Rapid City, South Dakota
Grover Cleveland was the only U.S. President to serve two nonconsecutive terms (1885-1889 and 1893-1897). It would have been undignified to craft him in bronze as twins (or two-headed), so sculptor James Maher sat Cleveland in a chair reading a book with one of his quotes about Labor Day, which Cleveland made a national holiday in 1894. He looks up from his book with a grumpy expression toward Rutherford B. Hayes, who's apparently disturbed Cleveland's reverie by power-walking across the street.
Amazing Arcana of the Presidents
Cleveland assured readers in a 1905 article in the Ladies Home Journal that, "sensible and responsible women do not want to vote."
