City of Presidents Info Center
Rapid City, South Dakota
Since 2000, Rapid City has been populating its downtown street corners with life-size bronze statues of all 40+ former U.S. Presidents (The time delay between a President leaving office and appearing as a statue is about one year). The figures, sculpted by a half-dozen different South Dakota artists, are not cold, suit-wearing men on pedestals. They're designed to more intimately showcase the personalities of each President, and they stand on the sidewalk so that you can get right next to each one.
Tracking down a specific President -- Where-oh-where is Chester A. Arthur? -- can take time, so the downtown Information Center supplies free walking tour paper maps to guide visitors to the street corner and President of their choosing.
The statues are within a few blocks of each other downtown, so you might use the map to visit the 40+ in chronological order, or just spot one while strolling or having lunch, and be surprised (or baffled) at what you find. Why is that fat President pitching a baseball? Why is that suit-wearing President dressed as a cowboy?
