Corporate Teamwork Head
Troy, Michigan
Officially titled "Reflective Head," this two-story-tall bronze sculpture of interlocking craniums was built in 1975 for Kmart headquarters in Troy. British sculptor Michael Ayrton created two asymmetrical big heads divided by a mirror, apparently visualizing the "inner reflections" and "jumbled information" -- according to its plaque -- that thwart business decision-making. Fortunately, teamwork in a large corporation like Kmart can help cut through the muddle!
One can only guess what Kmart honestly thought of the head, but in 2005 the company gave it to the city, which didn't know what to do with it, either. Was the sculpture too weird to stand outside the civic center? Since it was a head, should it go in front of the library?
Troy decided to temporarily park the head in an out-of-the-way spot behind some trees, and it's been there ever since.
