Self-Made Man
St. Louis, Missouri
A bronze statue depicts a larger-than-life nude man swinging a big mallet to carve himself out of a block of stone with a chisel. Artist Bobbie Carlyle described the man as "carving his character, carving his future." Carlyle herself carved a small business out of this particular artwork, selling the image on everything from posters to cowboy boots to mini-statues to this monumental version, which also stands in Batavia, Illinois, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Each sculpture is slightly different, which makes them unique artworks in execution if not in concept.
Carlyle created Self-Made Man in 1987, and has followed it up with a similarly-conceived Self-Made Woman, although she hasn't had the public exposure of the Man.
