Tessie: Recycled Sea Serpent
Saranac Lake, New York
"Tessie" was created in 2020 by eighth- and ninth-graders in a 3-D design and metal sculpture class at North Country School in Lake Placid. She's 45 feet long and 10 feet high, built out of sheet-metal roofing and junk from a knocked-down greenhouse, and undulates in and out of the grass next to the Domenico Electrical workshop, which supplied the electrical outlet faceplates for her scales.
The neck is hollow and large enough for an eighth- or ninth-grader to stand inside, hidden from view, so that they can unexpectedly pivot the head to frighten unwary passers-by.
