Hurseys Sculpture Park
Mocksville, North Carolina
On January 4, 2019, Jeff Hursey finished carving an eight-foot-tall Bigfoot out of a log with a chainsaw. He gave the Bigfoot red marble eyes and stood him in the trees just off the road that ran in front of his house. Within days, the county animal shelter was swamped with frantic calls about the Bigfoot, its eyes glowing red at night in the headlights of passing cars.
The animal shelter used its Facebook page to tell people to stop calling about the Bigfoot, the story went viral, and Hursey soon found himself besieged by reporters.
Recognizing that they were now part of the story, he erected a display featuring the Bigfoot's various media appearances. He has since added other creations: a totem pole, a teepee, a giant spider, a Flintstones car, a large pirate ship. The added oddities signal to passing motorists that the Bigfoot isn't real; its eyes still glow red at night.
