Maryland in Blue and Gray
Cockeysville, Maryland
The creator of this sculpture is currently unknown, although its subject is clear enough. During the Civil War, Maryland fielded soldiers in uniform on both sides: Union and Confederate. The sculpture depicts a Federal and Rebel soldier sitting side-by-side on a rock wall; the Rebel is thoughtfully handing the Federal a canteen of water.
The sculpture itself is made of plate metal, giving the larger-than-life soldiers' uniforms an angular, robotic look. And the two men have skeletal hands and hollow heads; all that's visible is their hair, eyes, and facial hair. Is the message that they killed each other, and now they're let-bygones-be-bygones ghosts?
