Car Plunge into Water (Gone)

Field review by the editors.

Palm Springs, California

A 1970s car is balanced as if about to plunge hood-first into a puddle of water. Officially titled "History of Suspended Time: Monument for the Impossible," in 2010 it briefly occupied a parking lot in Denver. Then it disappeared before reappearing here in April 2021, supposedly for the long-term.

According to artist Gonzalo Lebrija, this is a "physical and permanent realization" of one of his earlier art projects, where he hoisted a restored muscle car above a lake with a crane and then dropped the car into the water while filming it with a high-speed camera. The freeze-frame of the car just before it hit the lake fascinated him, and he turned it into this gravity defying and slightly moist sculpture.
