Molly Pitcher's Spring.

Bogus Molly Pitcher Spring

Field review by the editors.

Freehold, New Jersey

Revolutionary War aficionados know the story of "Molly Pitcher" -- the woman who bravely brought water to her husband and thirsty soldiers fighting the Redcoats at the 1778 Battle of Monmouth. But where did she get the water?

No one knew, but that didn't stop two enterprising local farmers, William D. Perrine and Alexander Jasco, from creating this small monument in 1938. They then sold the water from the adjacent spring to curious tourists.

At least two other supposed Molly Pitcher springs and wells were in the area, each marked by signs. When the battlefield became a state park, the signs were removed, but this small monument, overlooked, remained. By the time Park officials became aware of it, they decided to keep it in place as a legitimate cultural relic.

Scholars found the likely real spring in 2003, about a mile away from this one. It's still such a popular spot for tourists that the Park built an observation deck next to it.
